The business was founded in 1950 in Sasolburg, South Africa, and was based on procedures that German chemists and engineers had created in the early 1900s (see coal liquefaction). Sasol began selling ammonia, styrene, and butadiene as chemical intermediates in the 1960s. The fertilizers were then created using the ammonia. Sasol was a significant participant in the nitrogenous fertilizer industry by 1964. In the 1980s, this product line was expanded even more.
